Judaica: Ceramic Tzedakah Telephone
This classic #charity #coin box is #ceramic with a deep blue glaze. The text on the object is in Hebrew and says "צדקה", which translates to Tzedakah.
In #Judaism, #tzedakah means #justice and refers to the religious obligation to provide charity and help those in need. It is a duty, and includes giving money, food, clothing, or performing acts of service, such as visiting the sick or burying the dead. The concept emphasizes that giving is not a favour, but a fundamental part of living a just and #ethical life.
In our home, all abandoned loose change found on surfaces, the sofa and the floor, goes in the tzedakah coin bank. Once a year, we count the coins and we decide together what good we can do with the money.
The telephone is a metaphor for communication with the #Divine. Some modern Jewish thinkers and writers have used the physical telephone, or a phone call, as a metaphor for a personal connection with G*d or an instance of divine providence in an individual's life. For me, the tzedakah box shaped like a telephone reminds me that our daily actions connect us with the #mitzvah of #TikkunOlam - the Blessing and duty to restore Creation however we are able.
